Have you been looking for the best free hunting apps or free fishing apps? Tired of FREE not meaning free? There are a countless number of apps out for hunting and fishing that advertise themselves as free. You know the drill, you download the app because you are interested in a free product only to find out that once it is downloaded you have to pony up cash for every feature in the app. The list below contains the best iOS and Android phone apps for hunting that are really FREE. These are not "lite" versions or trials, they are the real deal. We tried to pick a variety of hunting apps to satisfy your hunting technology appetite.
WHATKNOT: What Knot to Do (in the Greater Outdoors) is your pocket guide to 70 must know knots in six categories. With this App you’ll always have just the right knot at the ready, with clear step-by-step tying instructions to meet any and every outdoor need.
Our view: We are all boyscouts at heart and knowing how to tie various knots should come in handy.
Our View: There really aren't many free options available that work. This is a generic measurement tool that is free and we believe will satisfy your needs until something better comes along. It was the most accurate of the free apps tested and is probably best suited for close range elevated hunts.
Where to Shoot: Search for shooting ranges near you, view video shooting tips and find other resources for shooters. Managed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), Where to Shoot is the web's most comprehensive directory of shooting ranges in the U.S. and Canada.
Our View: If you travel a lot or enjoy finding new locations to practice, then you'll enjoy this app.
OL Interactive: Outdoor Life is your go-to source for hard-core hunting and fishing guidance, precise how-to advice brought to you by leading experts, and information to make you more successful in the outdoors. OL Interactive includes photo galleries, how-to video, and more.
Our View: If you get Outdoor Life Magazine and you enjoy reading it, you'll enjoy the hidden extras this app provides from every issue.
Our view: It does what it says and is super easy to use. Downside, if you don't like RealTree products you won't like the app.
F&S Reader: The best hunting, fishing, shooting and survival information from the World’s Leading Outdoor Magazine is now available for your iPhone and iPod touch. All of Field & Stream’s award winning online content will be available including blogs, outdoor news stories, photo galleries, videos and how-to content.
Our View: One of the best outdoor reader apps available.
Berkley Bait Selector: Now you can choose the perfect Berkley bait for your next fishing adventure, or browse the entire family of Berkley brands, including Powerbait®, Gulp!(TM) and Gulp! Alive!(TM).
Our view: There aren't many free apps giving you a good bait selector. You name the fish and they'll tell you the bait. It would be great if it included other brands, but free has some limits.
Our View: Save the best for last, right. Can you say "WALKIE TALKIE." This wasn't designed for hunters, but you can take it in the woods or on the lake with you and use it like a good ole fashion walkie talkie.
Sportsman Tracker: We believe strongly that the first app that should be on this list is Sportsman Tracker. You can check out the many features on the site but keep in mind, we built it after reviewing everything that is currently available in order to give you a better product and to do it for free. Enjoy!
Our View: We are bias since it a sister company but, if you want to be able to get free prediction info quickly like solunar tables, times to hunt and fish, locations and weather, this is for you. No login, no user info, nothing, just go for it. Think Google meets hunting weather maps. Quick, mobile, easy and free.
UPDATE: A new paid app version of the software is available in the Android and iOS app stores. The web version is no longer supported. Hunt Predictor is the most advanced prediction formula for deer, turkey, and waterfowl. More accurate than solunar calendars alone. Utilize an algorithm based on 7 scientific weather variables proven to identify and predict wildlife movement.
